Limerence

“Limerence" is a state of mind which results from a romantic attraction to another person and typically includes obsessive thoughts and fantasies and a desire to form or maintain a relationship with the object of love and have one’s feelings reciprocated.” Limerence is a new film that is raw, real, relatable and a true depiction of love and relationships in the current day and age. It exposes the flaws found no matter your level or love and relation. Whether it be friends of friends, close friends, couples, engaged couples or married couples, there are trials that all must face and the limerence that can occur from the participants in that relationship. Charming and full of characters of all different spirits, this clever film is outside of the box and a breath of fresh air when it comes to typical Hollywood romantic comedies. One will find themself relating to the characters and the stories that exemplify the more common “screw ups” rather than the fairytale endings.

Birds Without Feathers

If birds of a feather flock together, then where do birds without feather flock to? In Birds Without Feathers, Director Wendy McColm brings audiences into the world of six characters, each one facing their own mental crisis. Without their feathers, they cannot fly, so the question throughout is: will each be able to “find themselves,” will they develop their own identities? Will they be able to grow their feathers? Relatable and relevant, this indie drama will leave you in deep thought and entertained all at once. Like the many that will see this flick, everyone is searching for that feeling of truth and discovering of one’s self while also seeking and craving human interaction to achieve that sense of belonging.

Low Low

Here’s the down low on the Low Low: this is one film that speaks to many people on many different levels and is certainly not one to miss. Targeting the underserved women of the world, the film, which is set to hit theaters later this week in Los Angeles, next week in New York City and across the globe in the weeks that follow, is a captivating, raw story of young women coming of age in a community struck with poverty, drugs and alcohol. Their want for more, their hopes and dreams, their fierce and tenacious attitudes and their realizations that life outside of their community exists, brings to light an existing issue in this country. The struggles of the underprivileged and the cycles that poverty can create are brought to light. Not only are the young women featured battling the trials of high school, but they are battling stigmas that have sadly defined their community. This gritty piece expresses the urgency of breaking the cycle. An all-star cast bring the important messages and story to life in a believable and thoroughly entertaining way.

The Bikes of Wrath

Having just celebrated the 4th of July, which is a holiday rooted in American history, it proves perfect timing in  regards to reviewing the documentary The Bikes of Wrath.  The film, which follows the path of the classic Steinbeck novel "The Grapes of Wrath,"celebrates the 80th anniversary of the book, while simultaneously explores the history of the Dust Bowl. An adventure which follows (ironically) a group of Australians on a quest to explore the same migration route that left a mark in    American history. Interesting and revealing of true humility and humanity, the film is both educational and feel-good. It is a testament to spirit and camaraderie of mankind.

King Charles Unicycle Troupe

Possibly the most challenging sport I have come across to date, Unicycling combines strength, balance, finesse and so much more. After just one lesson with Kip Anthony Jones of The King Charles Troupe, it was very apparent that this is not "like riding a bike." The Troupe, which was founded in the South Bronx, has reigned everywhere from center circle at the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus to the center courts of basketball arenas, and every street in between. In an exciting exhibition and event on November 11th at the Bronx Museum, their legacy and international success will be celebrated.
